How to Interpret the Bible

Dr. Arnold G. Fruchtenbaum, Director of Ariel Ministries

$1.00 per session, 10 sessions

The purpose of this course is to learn how to correctly interpret the Bible. The course will include the principles of the literal, historical, grammatical, and cultural hermeneutic. It will also cover symbolic language and how that interacts with the literal hermeneutic.

The historical aspect will include the historical backgrounds of biblical events and the grammatical aspect will focus on the meaning of the terms at the time they were written. Recognizing that while the whole Bible is to us but the whole Bible is not for us will clarify what applies to us today and what does not.

By applying the rules of interpretation, this course will also focus on the eight covenants of the Bible which give a knowledge of the Bible as a whole which, in turn, will make the study of the details much easier.

Messiah and the Tabernacle

Pastor Robert Morris, Director of HaDavar Messianic Ministries

$1.00 per session, 15 sessions

"...the dimensions, decorations, and rituals of the Tabernacle take up the better part of the books of Exodus and Leviticus, and make up a large part of the content of the Torah. Comprising such a large part of the Law’s content, these texts demand serious theological interpretation and application. In figurative terms they cry out Darsheni, 'Explain me.'" Pinchas Giller, The Jerusalem Report, February 20, 1997

This series concentrates on Chapters 25-30 of the Book of Exodus exploring both the original construction and importance of Israel’s Tabernacle in the wilderness as well as its Messianic significance. Pastor Robert Morris, M.Div., Director of HaDavar Messianic Ministries and a Jewish Believer in Jesus, will take you through the texts from a Jewish perspective. The series will unfold the original instructions given to Israel and the New Covenant truths they portray. Finally, you will learn how these truths relate to Believers today. The Tabernacle course is designed to enhance your understanding of this significant portion of the Bible, to deepen your understanding of Jesus and His priestly work on the behalf of Believers, and to strengthen your walk with the designer of the Tabernacle, The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. You will find yourself better equipped to share the Messiahship of Jesus with your Jewish friends, relatives,
co-workers, and neighbors.

The Book of Galatians

Mark Cameron

$1.00 per session, 7 sessions

This Book is a permanent break God put in writing to end the bondage to the Mosaic Law and place the Church in the liberty of Jesus the Messiah. The Diaspora placed Jews in every place, a pool ready for the evangelist thrust of Paul who never ceased going to the Jew first. However, he was the Apostle to the Gentiles among those Jews, and that is the essential priority of Galatians. If the Galatians were going to walk in the Spirit, they had to live by faith in the Messiah and not by the works of the Law—a tradition of 1400 years at the time. This is a challenge that Jews and Gentiles still face today. God takes us through wonderfully persuasive, yet sanctified questions, rationales, and conclusions set in the pen of the Apostle Paul. Paul, a Jewish rabbi, deals with three primary issues 1) his apostolic authority 2) salvation is by grace through faith alone and 3) strengthening the faith of the Galatian believers in view of the challenges they are encountering. These three issues face those of us in the 21st century as well.

The Book of Revelation

Mark Ellick, Missionary with Chosen People Ministries

$1.00 per session

In A.D. 90, while in exile, God gave the apostle John a series of visions. John was instructed to write what he saw, and his writings became the Book of Revelation. The book promises blessings to those who read it with understanding and follow its teachings. It also records God's ultimate victory over His enemies and the enemies of His people.

It is unfortunate that today many believe the Book of Revelation to be a book filled with obscure symbols that cannot be understood. John intended that we understand what he wrote. The Book of Revelation contains tremendous promises for obeying its contents, and obedience implies understanding.

This course is a verse-by-verse study of the Book of Revelation. The symbolic language is interpreted so that students may understand the literal message behind the symbols. The time line and action of the book are looked at in detail. Come with us as we journey through the book, and share in the blessings that we receive as we study the Revelation of Jesus the Messiah.

Jeremiah the Prophet

Pastor Robert Morris, Director of HaDavar Messianic Ministries

$1.00 per session

Due to the autobiographical nature of the book of Jeremiah, the author's character is better known than any other Hebrew prophet. Jeremiah's confessions show the spirit of a man who was retiring, sensitive, and fearful, yet clung tenaciously to his task in spite of persecution. Because of his immense sorrow at the impenitence of the people, Jeremiah has been given the title of "the weeping prophet."

Jeremiah was called to the prophetic office at a most unhappy time in the history of Judah. Both politically and morally, the nation was at a low ebb. God had earlier sent His prophets, but the people would not hear. Jeremiah was eventually called to warn the people of the impending judgment. This judgment against Judah is the great theme that runs through the book of Jeremiah.*

Old Testament Overview

Mark Cameron

$1.00 per session

This course is a study of the Old Testament and serves as an "indispensable foundation on which the New Testament is built." It will enlighten each student's understanding and appreciation of the New Testament. As we walk through the history and culture of the writer and original audience, we will see what our righteous and loving God had for them through the eyes of His Unfailing Word.

When we complete a book, each student will understand the outline of the book, its major eternal truths, and its focus on the coming Messiah. Students will glimpse the unifying hand of our Almighty God waving across the pages of the Old Testament from its beginning in Genesis to its close in Malachi.

Each book will be covered from the Jewish perspective. Instead of the traditional Christian arrangement of 39 books, we will utilize the traditional Jewish arrangement of the Canon of Scripture. The traditional Jewish arrangement condenses the Old Testament Canon into twenty-four books - the five of the Pentateuch, eight of the Prophets (Joshua, Judges, Samuel, Kings, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, the Minor Prophets), and the Writings consist of 11 books (Psalms, Proverbs, Job, Song of Solomon, Ruth, Lamentations, Ecclesiastes, Esther, Daniel, Ezra, and Chronicles).

New Testament History and Survey

John O'Dell

$1.00 per session

At the end of the Old Testament, Israel had no King and the Levites were the spiritual leaders. Persia was in charge politically; Hebrew culture was dominate in Israel and there was a small temple in Jerusalem. When the New Testament opens, the Pharisees and Sadducees are the spiritual leaders, Herod is King and there was a magnificent temple in Jerusalem. Politically, Rome is in charge and Greek culture is dominating the social scene. What happened between Malachi and Matthew?

In the New Testament History and Survey class, we will study how life changed for post-exilic Israel and how God's faithful remnant met the Messiah and brought about the birth of the Christian Church. The class will provide an overview of the New Testament in its historical, literary and theological context. It will cover the historical background of the New Testament from the time of Alexander the Great until the destruction of the Temple in 70 A.D. The class will study how the New Testament was written, the formulation of the canon and the transmission of the New Testament text up until today. It will also include a brief survey of each of the main sections of the New Testament with emphasis on the dating, author and purpose of each book.

The Book of Proverbs

Pastor Dennis Sherman, Irvine Community Church

$1.00 per session

The Book of Proverbs has two purposes: to give the believer moral skillfulness and mental discernment.

The first purpose is for the believer to develop skillfulness and discipline in Holy living. In the Book of Proverbs, "wisdom" signifies skillful living - the ability to make wise choices and live successfully according to the moral standard of the believing community. The other object to be acquired is "discipline," the necessary companion of wisdom. Discipline denotes the training of the moral nature, involving the correcting of waywardness toward folly and the development of reverence to the Lord, and personal integrity.

The second major objective is for the believer to acquire discernment. Proverbs will train them to discern lessons about life, such as distinguishing permanent values from immediate gratifications.*

This class is a verse-by-verse study of the Book of Proverbs by looking at the background of each of these important statements about wise living and learning how to apply them to our everyday life.

The Prophet Ezekiel

Pastor Robert Morris, Director of HaDavar Messianic Ministries

$1.00 per session

The prophet Ezekiel was a contemporary of Jeremiah and Daniel. His main goal is to declare the holy character of God and to extol His glory. The effect of Ezekiel’s labors is to be seen in the improved character of the Jewish people towards the close of the Babylonian captivity, and their general cessation from idolatry and return to the law.

For the average reader of the Bible, the Book of Ezekiel is like a maze of incoherent visions. This perception often prevents readers from studying the book and to miss one of the great literary and spiritual parts of the Old Testament.

John from the Top

Mark Ellick

$1.00 per session

John is very clear as to why he wrote his gospel. In John 20:30-31 he writes, "Many other signs therefore Jesus also performed in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these have been written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name.” In his gospel, John records a number of the signs (miracles) that Jesus performed, along with a number of things that Jesus said. He did so in order that one who reads the gospel with an open mind and the illuminating ministry of the Holy Spirit, will become convinced that Jesus is God incarnate, the Messiah.

This course in the gospel of John will be a verse-by-verse study of the book. Major themes will be discussed, the book’s relationship to the Old Testament will be studied, and John's emphasis on belief in Jesus, and how he develops this important theme, will be studied.

The goal of the course is two-fold. By the end of the course, the student should have a clear understanding of the book. Also, an important result of taking the course is that the student's faith be increased. We invite you to join us in this study of the Gospel of John.
