John wrote this letter to combat errors that had crept into the church. Errors regarding morals and errors concerning the person and work of Messiah. Therefore, John's focus is on fellowship with God. Fellowship brings full joy, freedom from sin, protection from error, and assurance of eternal life. Fellowship with Father is built upon truth. When fellowship is experienced, it keeps a person from doctrinal and moral error. John will also cover three special points; a. the principle of confession, b. Messiah's two ministries (1) He is the believer's advocate (2) He is the source of propitiation and c. The Sin unto Death.
